In this study, using the tephra dispersal model HAZMAP, we investigate the effect of using different meteorological datasets and eruption source parameters on tephra fallout hazard assessment for a sub-Plinian eruption of Vesuvius, which is considered as a reference case for hazard assessment analysis. We analyze the effect of using different meteorological data, from: i) radio-sounding carried out at the meteorological station of Brindisi (Italy) between 1962 and 1976 and between 1996 and 2012, and at Pratica di Mare (Rome, Italy) between 1995 and 2013; ii) meteorological models of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Furthermore, we consider the effects of perturbing reference eruptive source parameters. In particular, we vary the total mass, the total grain-size distribution, the column height, and the effective atmospheric diffusion coefficient to evaluate how these parameters affect the hazard probability maps. Moreover, the effect of the seasonal variation of the wind field and the effect of the rain on the deposit loading are considered. Results show that the parameter that mostly affects hazard maps is, as expected, the total erupted mass; furthermore, keeping constant the erupted mass, the most important control on hazard is due to the particle terminal settling velocity distribution which is a function of the total grain-size distribution, particle density and shape. Within the considered range variations, the hazard depends less on the use of different meteorological datasets, column height and effective diffusion coefficient.

We studied the tephra inventory of 14 deep sea drill sites of three Deep Sea Drilling Project and Ocean Drilling Program legs drilled offshore Guatemala and El Salvador (Legs 67, 84, and 138) and one leg offshore Mexico (Leg 66). Marine tephra layers reach back from the Miocene to the Holocene. We identified 223 primary ash beds and correlated these between the drill sites, with regions along the volcanic arcs, and to specific eruptions known from land. In total, 24 correlations were established between marine tephra layers and to well‐known Quaternary eruptions from El Salvador and Guatemala. Additional 25 tephra layers were correlated between marine sites. Another 108 single ash layers have been assigned to source areas on land resulting in a total of 157 single eruptive events. Tephra layer correlations to independently dated terrestrial deposits provide new time markers and help to improve or confirm age models of the respective drill sites. Applying the respective sedimentation rates derived from the age models, we calculated ages for all marine ash beds. Hence, we also obtained new age estimates for eight known but so far undated large terrestrial eruptions. Furthermore, this enables us to study the temporal evolution of explosive eruptions along the arc, and we discovered five pulses of increased activity: (1) a pulse during the Quaternary, (2) a Pliocene pulse between 6 and 3 Ma, (3) a Late Miocene pulse between 10 and 7 Ma, (4) a Middle Miocene pulse between 17 and 11 Ma, and (5) an Early Miocene pulse (ca. >21 Ma).

El Campo Volcánico Xalapa (CVX) consta de 42 conos de escoria y al menos 2 volcanes escudos, cuyas edades varían entre 2 millones de años (M.a.) hasta 870 años (a) antes del presente (datos radiométricos publicados). Mediante la determinación de los parámetros morfométricos, se estimaron las edades relativas de los conos de escoria (tipo de volcán predominante en el CVX) aun no fechados. La densidad de los conos de escoria dentro del campo varia de 0 hasta 2 por km2. El uso de la función kernel permite identificar zonas con mayor densidad de volcanes al NW de Xalapa entre Acajete y Las Vigas de Ramírez (grupo La Joya) y al norte de Coacoatzintla, mientras zonas con concentraciones menores están localizadas alrededor de Pacho Viejo y al norte de Ayahualulco. Aunque el Campo Volcánico Xalapa no es el campo con mayor número de edificios del Cinturón Volcánico Trans-Mexicano (CVTM), ni el más denso; sin embargo se debe crear consciencia de que puede dar lugar al nacimiento de un nuevo volcán en el futuro. Un monitoreo sería deseable.Palabras clave: Campo volcánico Xalapa; conos de escoria; volcanes escudo; volcanes; parámetros morfométricosAbstractThe Xalapa Monogenetic Volcanic Field (XMVF) defines a group of 42 scoria cones and at least two lava shields that erupted between 2 million and 870 years before present (according to published radiometric data). In this study, we measured the morphometric parameters of XMVF scoria cones in order to assign relative ages to undated volcanic centers. The density of vents within the limits of the volcanic field (estimated by using spatial point density analysis) and found to vary from 0 to a maximum of 2 volcanoes per square kilometer. Kernel density function analysis revealed that the highest concentrations of volcanoes occur NW of Xalapa between Acajete and Las Vigas de Ramirez (La Joya group), and N of Coacoatzintla, while lesser concentrations occur around Pacho Viejo and to the N of Ayahualulco. Although the XMVF is relatively small and has a low vent-density compared to other volcanic fields in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, a greater level of public awareness and hazard monitoring, is required in preparation for the next XMVF eruption.Keywords: Xalapa Monogenetic Volcanic Field; scoria cones; lava shields; volcanoes; morphometric parameters
