Hazard potential of perovskite solar cell technology for potential implementation of “safe-by-design” approach

Abstract: The perovskite solar cell (PSC) is a rapidly advancing solar technology with high efficiencies and low production costs. However, as the PSC contains methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3, MAPbI3) in the light-harvesting active layer, addressing the safety issue of PSCs is an important prerequisite for its commercialization. In this study, the potential hazards of the PSC were investigated with consideration of Pb species released from PSC using an ecotoxicity, cytotoxicity, chronic toxicity, and genotoxicity… Show more

“…23 LCAs können aber die komplexen Interaktionen zwi schen Chemikalien und biologischen Systemen nicht direkt abschätzen. 24 Die Toxizität von Blei sollte deshalb nicht unterschätzt und eine unab sichtliche Freisetzung verhindert werden. Das kann vor allem durch geeignetes Verkapselungs material und spezialisierte Recyclingsysteme ge schehen.…”

“…Secondly, all Pb-based perovskite QDs are a class of material for the photovoltaic application and expected to exceed the efficiency of the world-leading solar cells (CdTe, Si). 43,200 However, a major concern is Pb toxicity that can be neurotoxic, immunotoxic, and nephrotoxic to the human body. So, the safety of human health and environmental protection should be the prerequisite for the installation of perovskite solar panels on a commercial scale.…”

“…The main routes of exposure are ingestion, inhalation and dermal penetration, and because of their small size, NM can cross biological barriers and reach the systemic circulation, from where they can gain access to and accumulate in all tissues and organs. [118] The aim of the European Union Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive of the European Parliament and of the council of 4 July 2012 on WEEE [119] is to maximize the collection, recycling and recovery of valuable and hazardous materials from electronic waste in order to optimize the use of natural resources and to prevent the contamination of the environment. [120] A thin-film PV manufacturing facility with an annual production of 2000 tons of solar panels (= 10 MW) produces 0.1 % semiconductor material, the rest is glass.…”
