Hazardous waste landfill site selection in Khorasan Razavi Province, Northeastern Iran

Abstract: The disposal is the final step of any hazardous waste management plan. An inappropriate landfill site may have negative environmental, economical, and ecological impacts. Therefore, landfills should be sited carefully by taking into account various rules, regulations, factors, and constraints. In this study, candidate sites for hazardous landfills in the northeastern Khorasan Razavi province are determined using the integration of geographic information system and landfill susceptibility zonation methods. “…The land use of about 60% of the selected areas was moderate rangeland and other areas were barren lands and poor rangelands; none of these imposed restrictions on waste disposal. Also, unlike [23,28,29,31,32], in this research the wind patterns and directions were taken into account together with other criteria in order to select the best possible sites for waste disposal.…”

“…Pandey et al [28] used an expert-based ranking method for the selection of a municipal solid waste landfill site in Bhagalpur, India. Moghaddas and Namaghi [29] used a ranking method to find suitable hazardous waste landfill sites in the Khorasan Razavi Province of Iran. Isalou et al [30] deployed fuzzy logic integrated into Analytical Network Process (ANP) in another region of Iran.…”

“…The primary criteria are recognized from literature review (Hekmat et al, 2008;Rosendal, 2009;Sener et al, 2010;Ekmekcioglu et al, 2010;Moghaddas & Namaghi, 2011;Munawar & Fellner, 2013) and a number of face to face interviews with expert team. After preliminary screening and discussion with the expert team, the most important criteria are determined.…”

“…In selecting a new landfill site, all important criteria, including environmental, economic, and social elements, must be considered in the preliminary screening and landfill suitability assessment phase. Nevertheless, the criteria used may differ between research as they rely on the type of landfill (municipal or hazardous), as well as physical and ecological conditions of the research areas (Moghaddas & Namaghi, 2011;Bahrani et al, 2016). In fact, a comprehensive study carried out by Mat et al (2016) reported the varied landfill selection criteria across many nations.…”
