The need for improving the achievable performance of Digital Video Broadcasting via Satellite Second Generation (DVB-S2) for different applications has resulted in an extension of the DVB-S2 standard targeting the main satellite markets, that is, direct-to-home, professional links and very small aperture terminal, as well as emerging markets such as mobile services. In this paper, we present potential system performance improvements that can be achieved by deploying the techniques available from DVB-S2 Extension in satellite broadcast (direct-to-home profile) as well as broadband networks (very small aperture terminal scenario). It is shown that the combination of DVB-S2 Extension features offer significant advances and opportunities to service providers, particularly in emerging satellite systems such as multi-beam Ka-band broadband as well as broadcasting satellite networks.
