HDM—a model-based approach to hypertext application design

Abstract: Hypertext development should benefit from a systematic, structured development, especially in the case of large and complex applications. A structured approach to hypertext development suggests the notion of authoring-in-the-large . Authoring-in-the-large allows the description of overall classes of information elements and navigational structures of complex applications without much concern with implementation details, and in a system-independent manner. The paper presents HDM (Hyperte… Show more

“…We surveyed various model-driven approaches to design Web applications available in WWW conceptual model literature [2][3][4][5][6][7]. They show it is possible, and even convenient, to model separately at least the domain information space, the navigation, the access and sometimes also the operations.…”

“…Hypertext Design Model (HDM) Garzotto et al (1993) Relationship Management Methodology (RMM) Isakowitz et al (1995) Object-Oriented Hypermedia Design Methodology (OOHDM) Schwabe & Rossi (1995) World Wide Web Design Technique (W3DT / SHDT / eW3DT) Bichler & Nusser (1996) Attitudes Towards Methodology Usage When asked about the advantages or benefits of their principal methodology, the response from both samples (aggregated in Table 3) highlights cost effectiveness (74%), speed of development (63%), understandability (58%) and adaptability (53%) as the most important ones. The relative weight given by respondents to benefits that emphasize improved efficiencies in cost and speed suggests an inclination to use methodologies that assist project management.…”

“…Many innovative methods have been put forward by academics (Garzotto, Paolini and Schwabe, 1993;Isakowitz, Stohr and Balasubramanian, 1995;Gellersen, Wicke and Gaedke, 1997) but research indicates that practitioners are not making use of them (Barry and Lang, 2001). Should the IS community be alarmed at this?…”
