Head Posture Influences Low Back Muscle Endurance Tests in 11-Year-Old Children

Abstract: Poor low back muscle endurance has been shown to be a predictor of chronic low back pain. While posture is a modulator of low back muscle endurance, it is unclear whether the phenomenon is neural or mechanical. This study examined low back muscle endurance with changing head and neck posture in a sample of 117 children using the Biering-Sørensen test. Each subject performed the test in a neutral posture followed by randomly selected flexed and extended head and neck positions. Head posture was found to signifi… Show more

“…On the other hand, the activity of the lumbar multifidus muscles is higher during head extension compared to the neutral head position (7). Dejanovic (25), et al also showed that adding cervical extension to the Biering-Sorenson test in children resulted in higher back endurance scores compared to the cervical flexion (25).These findings reveal that FHP may have effects on the lumbar and trunk muscle performance in different ways and depends on functional situations. Conversely, acquiring a slump sitting position imposes an anterior translation to the head and increases the activity of cervical extensors compared to the upright sitting (9).…”

“…The quadratus lumborum muscle function can be assessed by lateral bridge test (31). Cholewicki (25) et al stated that the quadratus lumborum muscle is a major stabilizer of the lumbar spine while applying minimal loads on the lumbar spine (28). As shown before, young male elite golfers with low endurance scores on the side-bridge test are more likely to report future episodes of moderate and severe low back pain (32).…”

“…Our finding that difficulty in chewing was associated with SN/shoulders supports these studies. Moreover, the position of the head seems to affect the muscle activity of the lumbar region 28 30. In particular, head posture may affect pelvic position and sitting posture 31 32.…”

“…Ada dua penjelasan potensial mengenai pengaruh postur pada daya tahan otot punggung bawah yaitu ketegangan saraf atau perubahan postur tertentu yang mengakibatkan perubahan pada otot punggung. Daya tahan otot punggung yang buruk ini, berhubungan dengan nyeri pinggang jangka panjang (Dejanovic, Balkovec, & McGill, 2015).…”
