Headache disorders as risk factors for sleep disturbances in school aged children

Abstract: Several epidemiological studies have shown the presence of comorbidity between various types of sleep disorders and different headache subtypes. Migraine without aura is a sensitive risk factor for disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep (odds ratio (OR) 8.2500), and chronic tension–type headache for sleep breathing disorders (OR 15.231), but headache disorder is a cumulative risk factor for disorders of excessive somnolence (OR 15.061). This result has not been reported in the clinical literature.

“…44 Individuals with allergic rhinitis sleep poorly and have sleep-disordered breathing and subsequent daytime sleepiness. 45,46 Although children with migraine headaches subjectively experienced more sleep problems than did healthy control children, 47,48 more objective actigraphy did not show differences in sleep parameters. 49 Our data failed to demonstrate an association between inadequate sleep and ADHD in either age group in multivariate models.…”

“…Data about sleep disorders in tension type headache are limited. An association has been found with narcolepsy [79], and CTTH has been indicated as a trigger for sleep-breathing disorders [82], however, these findings require further confirmation.…”

“…A significant risk for sleep disturbances, particularly as concerns initiating and maintaining sleep, is presented by sufferers of migraine with aura, and a similar association exists between CTTH and sleep breathing disorders [82]. Additionally, headache disorders are associated with excessive daytime somnolence.…”

“…Although these features can be common in children at school age, they are usually related to the early onset of bruxism and when taken together, it characterizes this condition 1,[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] .…”

“…It is known that the occlusion is an etiological factor of bruxism 20 , although its removal does not completely eliminate the habit. In our case, there has been no occlusal interference, and the use of appliance is aimed to promote changes in muscle activity and to stop the habit, preventing damage to periodontal structures and minimizing the adverse effects of prolonged overcharging [19][20][21][22][25][26][27] .…”
