2 3The Cempedak Bay beach stability assessment was performed by comparing the spatial and temporal pattern of beach variability before and after sand nourishment. The analysis of temporal sand volume patterns shows that the beach has lost about 6% or 10 000 m 3 volume of sand which is equivalent to 4 m 3 /m per year from the nourishment zone over the 2?5-year monitoring period. The present shoreline recession rate is established to be 1?7 m/year (valid for data set of March 2005 to July 2007). The analysis of seasonal changes is assessed through temporal beach volume patterns, which indicate that shoreline variability can be characterised by an alongshore rhythmic pattern of alternating seasonal behaviour. A simple seasonal transport pattern is proposed to account for alternating erosion and accretion. The temporal distribution pattern of beach level changes reveals the existence of a nodal point around 40 to 50 m offshore, which is influenced by the monsoonal system. The spatial distribution of the beach width indicates that the northern beach area is wider whereas the southern beach area experiences lower beach width, which is coincident with the temporal pattern of sand volume and beach profile changes. A slight beach rotation does exist attributed to a seasonal or periodic shift in wave climate, in particular wave direction. The planform stability of the beach is tricky to determine due to model uncertainties, especially the selection of the diffraction point. This baseline study is important towards the development of a process-based model in order to investigate the morphological nearshore behaviour of headland bay beaches.

Tivela mactroides is an important fishery resource for local artisanal fishermen in Brazil and the establishment of management programmes for this species requires information about its reproductive cycle, the main focus of this study. The reproductive pattern of T. mactroides from Caraguatatuba Bay on the southeast coast of Brazil was analysed by means of histological techniques from November 2003 to October 2004. The species had heterogeneous continuous gametogenesis, with no resting period and the sex ratio did not differ significantly from 1:1. Maturity indices varied over the months, with slightly higher proportions of mature gametes from May 2004 to October 2004, which indicates a high proportion of spawning in winter and spring; however, small releases of gametes may also have occurred during summer and autumn. As the reproductive cycle is heterogeneous and temporal seasonality in gametogenesis is not predictable, it is not possible to designate a closed fishing season for the present population as a management strategy to avoid overexploitation.

Tropical and extratropical‐origin storm wave types and their influence on the East Australian longshore sand transport system under a changing climate

Tropical expansion is potentially an amplifier of coastal change in the subtropics, through directional wave climate shifts. The storm wave climate and directional wave power distribution along the Southeast Australian Shelf (SEAS) is investigated with respect to tropical extent. Forty years of storm wave observations from nine midshelf wave buoys are evaluated using synoptic storm wave typing. A robust latitudinal and along‐shelf gradient in storm wave types and wave propagation patterns exists. The tropical origin storms produce a shore‐normal propagation pattern along the SEAS, reduce the connectivity of coastal compartments through minor headland bypassing events or episodically reversing the net northward transport. In contrast, the extratropical origin storms produce a shore‐oblique propagation pattern from the Southern Tasman to the Coral Sea, and are an important control on the connectivity of regional longshore sand transport through episodic major headland bypassing events between compartments, and the maintenance of down‐drift coastlines in dynamic equilibrium. Future climate change projections indicate that the recent trend in the expansion of the latitudinal extent of the tropics in the south‐west Pacific region will continue throughout this century. The combined impacts of a projected 2.5° poleward shift on the storm wave climate is a significant reduction in net northward longshore sand transport and the efficiency of headland bypassing events. On the North and Central Coasts of New South Wales we project a ∼30% reduction in longshore sand transport for the dominant extratropical‐origin storm events, together with a ∼5% increase in reversed (net southward) longshore sand transport for tropical‐origin storm events.
