Health: A Developing Concept in Nursing

Abstract: For the concept of health to be conceptualized, it is important that nurses have consensus regarding the definition of health. The nursing discipline should define health in a manner that is consistent with its philosophical presuppositions. Further, it should be measurable, empirically based, and capture the outcomes that are sensitive to the nursing interventions.

“…Initially in this review, health was conceptualized based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 1948 definition as “A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (Nobile, 2014). Although this WHO definition of health is the most cited (Alslman et al, 2017), best-known (Bircher & Kuruvilla, 2014) definition of health, it perceives health as this broad goal, that could change with context, places, and people. In the context of stroke family caregivers, additional layers of complexity are presented because these caregivers must deal with additional stressors compared to the average person not providing care (Ågren et al, 2015; Bom et al, 2019).…”

HRQL, a multidimensional concept, includes domains related to physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning (Bakas et al, 2012).…”
