Health and Economic Burden of Major Cancers Due to Smoking in Korea

Abstract: Cigarette smoking is one of the most important public health concerns in Korea and worldwide. A number of studies have been conducted to measure the health and economic burden of smoking, but these did not reflect recent changes such as the decrease in smoking rate and the increase in the incidence of cancer. The purpose of this study was to provide up-to-date estimates of the health and economic burden of cancer caused by smoking and to compare the results with those of previous studies. Cancer-related burden… Show more

“…The various KBD DALY measurement studies (1314151617181920212223242526272829303132333435) can be narrowed down to two major works supported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The first, KBD 2002, was a 4-year research project and involved the collaboration of five institutions (Seoul National University, the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, Kyung Hee University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Hanyang University).…”

“…The incidence rate of cancer was estimated using NHIC claims data and a variation of an algorithm we developed previously (Yoon et al, 2007;Cheng et al, 2011). Similar algorithms have been used to estimate epidemiologic parameters for various diseases in previous studies (Kim et al, 2008;Lee et al, 2011;Oh et al, 2012). All cancers were divided into different disease groups according to the international classification of diseases (ICD)-10 diagnosis code groups (WHO, 2012).…”

“…Korean men have followed a similar pattern, with a DALY of 1930.1 in 2001 increasing to 2038.9 in 2008 [7,8]. In addition, although smoking rates have decreased since the 1980s, the incidence or mortality from cancer reflects past smoking rates—9–40 years prior to these outcomes occurring [9].…”
