“…Two small cross-sectional studies, an uncontrolled one involving 81 prematurely retired persons (3) and a controlled one involving 88 men retired early due to illness and two control groups (2), indicated a perceived health improvement after retirement. In contrast, Edén et al, in a controlled longitudinal study of 453 persons who retired early with a similar number of age-sex-residential area matched referents from the general population (4,12), found that over a 5-year period from retirement, well-being and health status among the retired persons declined to a larger extent than among the referents. Available evidence indicates that retirement at or close to normal retirement age is not associated with health deterioration, while for non-voluntary retirement, such as retirement due to illness, the effects on health are less clear, even though some studies indicate that perceived health tends to worsen (4,12).…”
