“…Next, standardised forms commonly allow for documentation of only a mother and father , and many 2SLGBTQQIA+ parents felt excluded and offended by this oversight (Cloughessy, 2020; Coulter‐Thompson et al., 2022; Gibson, 2015; Goldberg, 2014; Janmohamed, 2014; McNair et al., 2008). This was of particular concern to families with children with health concerns and developmental needs, who were seen by many more health and service providers and therefore had completed many more intake forms than most other families (Coulter‐Thompson et al., 2022; Gibson, 2015). This resulted in a cumulative negative impact on parents, who were more frequently reminded that their Family structure did not fit with ‘the norm.’ In some cases, parents were reported to have adjusted the forms to reflect their own Family structure (Cloughessy, 2020; Gibson, 2015), but the use of heteronormative language on standardised forms was seen to reinforce heteronormative families as the dominant Family structure and excluded diverse families as the other .…”
