Health Care Providers’ Perspectives on Promoting Physical Activity and Exercise in Health Care

Abstract: Health care providers (HCPs) are entrusted with providing credible health-related information to their patients/clients. Patients/clients who receive physical activity and exercise (PAE) advice from an HCP typically increase their PAE level. However, most HCPs infrequently discuss PAE or prescribe PAE, due to the many challenges (e.g., time, low confidence) they face during regular patient care. The purpose of this study was to ascertain HCPs’ perspectives of what could be done to promote PAE in health care. H… Show more

“…Lack of time is the primary barrier reported, followed by confidence and a lack of specialized training (7–9). In past studies, referrals to allied health professionals who specialize in physical activity and exercise were low but are proposed as a solution (9,10,27). Our findings align with both the low overall rates and frequency of referrals and that referrals were primarily for lifestyle management and/or exercise prescription.…”

Among the major global public health problems are obesity and overweight, which results in the rising risk of comorbidities, mortality and generates healthcare costs ( 3 ). Similarly, smoking causes a number of tobacco-related conditions, including respiratory diseases, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases, which increase the risk of death and generate considerable healthcare costs ( 4 ).…”

“…Educational training that equips providers with the skills and comfort to initiate more exercise content with patients is needed to address these barriers. Self-motivation is a key factor in the retainment of education among adults, and physicians interested in providing patients with counseling and/or prescriptions have noted a desire for more educational training on PA counseling and exercise prescription (11,12,14,15). Although individual studies have investigated the efficacy of individual interventions (e.g., educational workshops (16)), no study has amalgamated or compared this literature.…”
