Health Control of Pig Herds on Commercial Farms

Abstract: The concept of modern industrial production of pigs on commercial farms is based, among other things, on the implementation of biosecurity measures as well as solving problems of environmental protection, which greatly burden the production. It is well known that good health is a prerequisite for good pig reproduction, that is, a successful and profi table production. The health status of the herd depends on many factors such as the maintenance technology, nursing, nutrition, organization, level of staff train… Show more

“…Many solutions applied to industrial farms in order to improve profitability, increase efficiency and production safety often cause discomfort, pain and stress or distress of animals while preventing their natural instinctive behavior, which is largely reflected in the economic output of production. In addition, it should be kept in mind that in most cases it is about pigs of different age categories, often of different geographical and health backgrounds, collected in a limited area, and early maturing pigs highly sensitive to stress, which inevitably leads to the creation of conditions for the emergence of infectious diseases (Uzelac and Vasiljević 2011, Vidović et al 2011, Bojkovski et al 2014. Omissions and mistakes in maintaining the required level of biosecurity usually lead to the onset of disease, reduction in production volume, death, and loss of earnings, thus endangering the survival of the herd (Bojkovski i sar, 2005(Bojkovski i sar, , 2015.…”

“…There is a high risk of neonatal diseases, and preventive and prophylactic measures against diarrhea and pneumonia are critical. For the 4–10 days after weaning, diarrhea caused by colibacillosis is very common (Zamora, Reinhardt, Polette, & Macias, ); the extrinsic causes are the sudden deprivation of maternal antibodies due to diet changes as well as variations in temperature, humidity and other environmental conditions that affect the immune system of the animal (Bojkovski, Vasiljević, Stojanović, & Rogožarski, ). During the fattening phase (after weaning), swine dysentery is another problem, so the use of antibiotics is a common practice to avoid this issue.…”

“…Nowadays, there are a lot of diseases of bacterial, viral or parasitic etiology which may endanger health status and reproduction of animals and therefore complete pig production in intensive rearing. By applying of prophylactic and therapeutic measures along with increased supervision of professional services, it is possible to keep under control all these diseases (Bojkovski et al, 2014).…”
