Health economic evaluation of strategies to eliminate gambiense human African trypanosomiasis in the Mandoul disease focus of Chad

Abstract: Human African trypanosomiasis, caused by the gambiense subspecies of Trypanosoma brucei (gHAT), is a deadly parasitic disease transmitted by tsetse. Partners worldwide have stepped up efforts to eliminate the disease, and the Chadian government has focused on the previously high-prevalence setting of Mandoul. In this study, we evaluate the economic efficiency of the intensified strategy that was put in place in 2014 aimed at interrupting the transmission of gHAT, and we make recommendations on the best way for… Show more

“…The discussions around both FBT and echinococcosis highlighted that modeling could be used to delineate appropriate, cost-effective packages of interventions for reducing infection intensity. For gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (gHAT), participants discussed how modeling has been used to analyze the cost-effectiveness of past interventions as well as recommend efficient future strategies [ 30 ]. It was raised that it can be challenging for non-modelers to quickly understand technical modeling outputs (eg, health economic results based on “willingness-to-pay” thresholds) and this is an important hurdle to overcome in communication if modeling is to be used to support decision making.…”
