Health impacts related to urban and transport planning: A burden of disease assessment

Abstract: Non-compliance of international exposure recommendations was estimated to result in a considerable BD and in substantial economic expenditure each year in Barcelona. Our findings suggest that (1) the reduction of motor traffic together with the promotion of active transport and (2) the provision of green infrastructure would result in a considerable BD avoided and substantial savings to the public health care system, as these measures can provide mitigation of noise, air pollution and heat as well as opportuni… Show more

“…Otherwise, general public understands the use of an index ranging from good to unhealthy, and it becomes the 750 most popular way to clarify air pollution levels in the vast range of countries and regions. Such indices were firstly developed in early 1970's, and have been evolving since then [11,12]. There are various air pollution quality indexes like Air Quality Index (AQI) which is also known as Air Pollution Index (API) [13] or Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) [4,14].…”

“…On the other hand, Mueller et al [19] focused their study on burden of disease (BD) due to exposures affected by urban planning and transportation. The findings made by the authors suggest that: (1) the reduction of road traffic together with the promotion of active transport and (2) the provision of green infrastructure would result in a considerable avoided BD and substantial savings for the public health system, since these measures can provide mitigation of noise, air pollution and heat, as well as opportunities for the promotion of physical activity (PA).…”

“…After the peak hours in Beijing 60db of sound is measured, which will not allow the inhabitants to sleep (Wang et al, 2014) Recent study shows that around 20% mortality could be forestalled each year by implementing the international recommendation standards to downsize the motorization transport and improve the non-motorized transport user (Muller et al, 2017). The 19th century was considered the car-centric planning era, but "the good days of the automobile are over", now it's time to downsize the car, and move towards smart mode of transportation (Gehl, 2016b).…”
