Health in the rural environment: a postural evaluation of milking workers in Brazil

Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the postures of workers during the activities of milking and handling dairy cattle in the Community of Campo Mourão Municipalities, in Brazil. To identify the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms, the study was divided into two stages: first, we identified the demographic profile of the sample through a questionnaire and then obtained information about problems with pain and discomfort by applying the Standardised Nordic Questionnaire. The second stage consisted of an analysis of th… Show more

“…Lifting is generally performed with lumbar flexion, as the containers are mostly stored on the ground; the loads must be placed precisely on the workshop table, which is an intense effort. This type of constraint in milk production has already been quantified among farmers in Brazil [26]. The perceived difficulty of these load-bearing tasks is objectified by KIM analysis, which yields the highest average score (Figure 4), partly due to our predominantly female subject group and the KIM method, which, being based on the ISO 11228-1 standard, differentiates between genders [27].…”

“…In the livestock field, Taghavi and Mokarami [62] used the REBA method to assess the postural burden related to feeding, milking and dung removal during milk production. In Brazil, numerous authors [50] did the same with regard to milking and livestock management activities, demonstrating a high level of risk over the course of the activity. Agriculture Das and Gangopadhyay [47] applied REBA in potato growers in order to assess musculoskeletal disorders.…”
