Health Inequity by Design: Waiting Rooms and Patient Stress

Abstract: Little attention has been paid to health inequities designed into the physical spaces themselves. Clearly design is an important part of patient care. Design is simultaneously a complex system itself while existing as part of a larger complex (healthcare) system. For example, it is not enough to say that a patient experiences more stress because she/he is being treated in a hospital in a lower income area. The key, here, is that evidence demonstrates design as an important component, systemically, in healthcar… Show more

“…Individuals interested in joining Parsley Health used an online portal to sign-up. At this initial point of contact, individuals encountered a digital space designed to set them at ease ( 24 ).If potential patients contacted Parsley Health to learn more before enrolling, they interacted with an employee on the “member experience” team who answered questions about membership logistics and costs. The team member could also help patients choose a provider with appropriate clinical expertise, and one who may be a good personality fit.…”

“…In other words, by attending to the communication process and focusing on interactional patterns, practitioners can work to perturb existing patterns and make systemic changes from within a given context (Parrish-Sprowl, 2014). The body of literature reflecting the CC perspective and complexity-informed approaches in action is growing (for examples see WHO, 2015;Deason, 2020;Parrish-Sprowl et al, 2020;Lamb, 2021;Rascon, 2022). The current study aims to expand this literature further and acknowledge the call for a paradigm shift with its complexity-informed exploration of discourse related to mental health and service availability at universities in three countries to bring global perspective to the conversation.…”

“…Long waiting times are a global phenomenon and more measures need to be taken to reduce patient waiting times in public hospitals (Biya, et al, 2022). In hospitals, there are several areas where patients may wait, including outpatient department, consultation room, laboratory, testing room, X-ray, etc (Lamb, 2021). Outpatient Departments (OPD) of hospitals represent an important stake in primary care provisioning (Amarathunga, et al, 2021).…”
