Health of wild fish exposed to contaminants of emerging concern in freshwater ecosystems utilized by a Minnesota Tribal community

Abstract: Fish serve as indicators of exposure to contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) ‐ chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, hormones, and personal care products – which are often designed to impact vertebrates. To investigate fish health and CECs in situ, we evaluated the health of wild fish exposed to CECs in waterbodies across northeastern Minnesota with varying anthropogenic pressures and CEC exposures: waterbodies with no human development along their shorelines, those with development, and those directly receivi… Show more

“…Histopathology is one method that can be used to provide data on host-level and population-level health and be used as an early indicator of infectious and/or zoonotic disease. Histopathology is useful in providing a thorough picture of disease status by preserving host tissue architecture enabling the assessment of pathological and/ or immunological changes resulting from infectious or noninfectious etiologies (Deere et al, 2023;Keele et al, 2009;Lonsdorf et al, 2022;Munson et al, 2005;Terio et al, 2011). Host health data can also provide information on the overall health of animal populations.…”
