Health-Related Quality of Life Among Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease

Abstract: We evaluated health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and compared the results with those of the general population. We also evaluated the possible association between some demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with PAD and HRQoL. A cross-sectional study involved 102 consecutive patients with verified PAD referred to the Dedinje Vascular Surgery Clinic in Belgrade. The HRQoL was measured using Medical Outcome Survey Short Form 36 (SF-36). Patie… Show more

“…27 The association of impaired physical function and HRQoL with PAD, with or without symptoms, has been reported. 28,29 In our study, patients with borderline ABI had worse HRQoL and lower scores in all EQ-5D (mobility, self-care and usual activity) except for anxiety/depression and pain/discomfort compared to those with normal ABI. Other researchers have also reported poorer HRQoL in individuals with borderline ABI than in those with normal ABI.…”

“…However, the difference in all other domains also clearly exceeded the minimum clinically relevant difference of 4 points. It seems to be a general finding that subjects with PAD report an impaired generic health status; this has been demonstrated using the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (46). Although differences in generic health status, as measured by EQ-5D-3L, were statistically significant in the current study, their clinical relevance might be disputable.…”

“…These data are similar to those found in literature. Indeed, patients with ischemic or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation or obliterative arteriopathy have an impaired QOL compared to the general population and patients undergoing valve replacement have a better QOL after surgery [31][32][33][34].…”
