Health‐related quality of life and health service use following total hip replacement surgery

Abstract: An almost immediate impact on quality of life was evident, probably indicating successful pain alleviation. Service use indicated adequate discharge planning and successful recovery. Having ward nurses as researchers was instrumental to continuity of communication between patients, families and service providers, which suggests increased potential for continuity of care.

“…The recovery shown by the patients in this study was much faster than what has been documented previously at our institution 2,4,6,32 or in other studies of recovery in THR. 12,16,26,27,36,38 Furthermore, with no significant complications in these selected patients out to three months, this rapid rehabilitation protocol after minimally invasive THA was determined to be safe.…”

“…Our data show that the results of the mental component of the SF-12 improved immediately and that these improvements were maintained for 3 months. McMurray et al 26 3 attribute this improvement in the mental score to pain relief. However, in the current study using minimally invasive techniques showed rapid improvement in the physical measures as well.…”

“…Research studies commonly report 90-95% survival rate of the prosthesis at 10 years (see for example Berry et al, 2002). In terms of clinical effectiveness it appears that patients are happy with the results of surgery, with one study showing 90% satisfied at 15 years (Roder et al, 2003), and that health related quality of life improves after THR (McMurray et al, 2002). However, such benefits depend to some extent on patient factors such as psychological profile before surgery (Huo and Muller, 2004).…”

“…The benefits of Total Hip Replacement (THR) are well documented in the literature, and have been shown to improve health outcomes and quality of life for those who have undergone this type of surgery (Garellick et al, 1998;McMurray et al, 2002;Gogia et al, 1994). There has however been little study into the effects and impact on patients' quality of life while they wait to undergo this type of surgery.…”
