Health-related quality of life and return to work after critical illness in general intensive care unit patients: A 1-year follow-up study

Abstract: Intensive care unit survivors had significantly lower health-related quality of life at 1 yr compared to the general population and significantly reduced compared to their states before intensive care unit admission. Less posttraumatic stress and optimism were predictors of higher health-related quality of life and return to work/school. Trauma patients had the largest decrease in both physical and mental scores. Only half of the patients had returned to work/school.

“…The surgical ICU case mix in this study varies from the previous study conducted in Barbados Semei-Spencer et al (Table 2) and mean APACHE IV sores (Table 1) in our study were similar to the report by Zimmerman et al (2). However, higher mean APACHE IV scores (73.1) were reported from a Saudi Arabian ICU, and their patients were admitted with severe sepsis and septic shock (7). Hence it is apparent that caution must be applied when making decisions based on APACHE IV scores (8).…”

“…Return-to-work may offer a therapeutic means for survivors to claim normality, a sign of wellbeing that the person can return to previous work. Preliminary evidence suggests it's an important rehabilitation goal with significant impact on quality of life (Myhren, 2010). Nevertheless, the limited evidence is not proportionate to the steep rise in cancer survivors and quality of life issues in cancer survivorship recently.…”

“…These patients have a median survival of more than 5 years, yet commonly suffer from long-term neuromuscular, psychiatric, cognitive, and pulmonary disorders that are associated with poorer functional status, decreased quality-of-life, and increased caregiver burden [3][4][5][6][7]. Recently, attention has focused on the epidemiology, mechanisms, and adverse effects of laryngeal, swallowing, and voice disorders in these patients [8,9].…”
