Health-related quality of life, anxiety and depression in thyroid cancer patients under short-term hypothyroidism and TSH-suppressive levothyroxine treatment

Abstract: Objective: Very few previous studies have compared the degree of health-related quality of life (HRQL), depression and anxiety of differentiated thyroid cancer patients (DTC) under short-term hypothyroidism and levothyroxine treatment. Methods: Using patient-completed instruments, we examined the frequency of physical complaints, HRQL, anxiety and depression in 130 DTC patients hospitalized for radioiodine therapy or wholebody diagnostics (age 52 years, female 71%) under short-term hypothyroidism (4 weeks of l… Show more

“…showed a decreased HRQOL and a high prevalence of anxiety in DTC patients on T4 suppression therapy, but the prevalence of depression was not increased [23]. Similarly, we found significantly increased HADS-A scores in our subjects compared to that of the general population control.…”

“…also reported that depression and anxiety in patients with DTC are highly correlated with QOL. The most important determinants for depression and anxiety in their study were social support and a sence of coherence; whereas TSH did not show a statistically significant association with depression or anxiety [23]. In addition, it has been reported that patients with head and neck cancers who are more optimistic have a higher HRQOL [28].…”

“…Expanding these results, another study examined the frequency of physical complaints, health-related QoL, anxiety, and depression in 130 DTC patients hospitalized for diagnostic procedures or thyroid remnant ablation with radioiodine under short-term hypothyroidism (46). The results were compared with those of 100 DTC out-patients under suppressive doses of LT4 following radioiodine treatment.…”

“…Levothyroxine withdrawal causes a short-term hypothyroidism in these patients and compels symp toms such as fatigue, decreased appetite, fluid retention and constipation [6,7]. Besides, previous findings have shown that these episodes of hypothyroidism have noticeable negative effects on patients' quality of life (QOL) and their psychometric functionality [8,9].…”
