Health-related quality of life in patients with newly diagnosed antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis

Abstract: Background Anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) can present with a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms. The relative effects of different manifestations on health related quality of life (HRQOL) is unknown. Methods We conducted an individual patient data meta-analysis of baseline Short Form 36 (SF-36) scores from four randomized controlled trials of patients with newly diagnosed AAV. We determined the associations between organ manifestations at trial entry and the SF-36 Physical C… Show more

“…Walsh and colleagues were the first to examine the independent associations of QOL in AAV 19. Although their analysis was restricted to newly diagnosed patients and assessed only clinical factors, they also identified old age and neurological involvement as potentially important determinants of poor physical related QOL.…”

“…In these patients, scientific evidence regarding the use of secondline drugs-often prescribed on a casebycase basis according to deci sions made by the treating c linician-is scarce. This situation is complicated by the shortage of evidence from controlled trials demonstrating the superiority of any immuno suppressive agent used in SLE, [2][3][4] although, in a study reported in 2011, mycophenolate mofetil was found to be a more efficacious maintenance therapy than azathioprine in patients with lupus nephritis who responded to induction therapy. 5 Biologic agents, a relatively new class of drugs, emerged at the beginning of this cen tury as possible gamechangers in the thera peutic strategy in SLE.…”

“…These definitions have now evolved into more generalized terms, which refer to all small molecules that character ize a particular biological system. 3 The main aims of metabolomic investigations are to identify and monitor metabolic characteris tics, phenotypes and changes, with respect to factors such as environment, lifestyle, or potential pathophysiological processes. For a wide range of diseases, great expectations have been placed on metabolomics in the dis covery of biochemical changes associ ated with pathogenesis-either directly or i ndirectly-that could represent reliable diagnosis or prognostic biomarkers.…”
