Leg cramps have been listed by dialysis patients as one of the major stressors that might cause a variety of psychological and physiological issues. A complementary and alternative therapy called foot reflexology can be utilized in addition to more mainstream medical procedures. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of reflexology foot massage on leg cramps for hemodialysis patients. Design: A quasiexperimental design was applied. Setting: The hemodialysis units are affiliated with Mansoura International Hospital. Results: There was a significant improvement with a highly statistically significant difference in all A novel muscle cramp scale (MCS) items scores, which measure the frequency of reported muscle spasms for hemodialysis patients during the sessions of dialysis pre-and post-application of reflexology foot massage at a P-value <0.001. Conclusion: This study found that reflexology foot massage significantly reduced the frequency, intensity, and length of leg cramps in hemodialysis patients. As a result, it is more successful at reducing leg cramps in these patients. Recommendation: This study recommends introducing reflexology foot massage as routine care in dialysis units, which in turn creates a new area and a new trend in the nursing field, which sequentially increases the value of nursing.

IntroductionThe two main psychological issues that people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) experience are depression and anxiety. We conducted this study to determine both the prevalence of depression and anxiety, and the factors associated with them, among hemodialysis patients.MethodsPatients aged 18 years or older, who had received hemodialysis in a hemodialysis center in Elbasan, for at least 3 months were included in this study. Beck Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory Instruments were used to assess hemodialysis patients levels of depression and anxiety.ResultsOverall, 107 hemodialysis patients (men 65.4%) with a mean age of 57 ± 8.9 years were enrolled in the study. The prevalence of anxiety and depression resulted to be 85.98, and 84.11%, respectively. We found a significant difference in depression and anxiety scores in patients age groups of 61–70 years old (OR = 1.8; 95% CI [0.7–3.7]; p = 0.041), in non-smoking patients (OR 3.4; 95% CI [1.09–8.2]; p = 0.04), in diabetic patients (OR 3.4; 95% CI [1.09–8.2]; p = 0.04), and in patients with a time in dialysis of 6–10 years and >11 years, respectively, (OR 3.4; 95% [1.5–9.0]; p = 0.01), (OR1.3; 95% CI [0.4–3.6]; p = 0.04).ConclusionOur study shows that the prevalence of mental disorders (depression and anxiety) is high among patients with ESRD on maintenance hemodialysis. We recommend a routine screening and referral to psychological health specialists to evaluate the mental health disorders among hemodialysis patients with the primary aim of improving their quality of life.

Background: Hemodialysis is the most widely used treatment modality worldwide, it is associated with high rates of functional impairment, morbidity, hospitalization and mortality. Therefore, increasing physical activity through regular exercise, especially intradialytic leg exercise, might be an effective way to improve their functional status which includes physical, mental, and social life's aspects. Aim of the current study: it was to evaluate the effectiveness of intradialytic leg exercise on functional status among patients on hemodialysis. Design: Explanatory randomized control study design was utilized to accomplish the study purpose. Research hypotheses: H1: Study group who received the intradialytic leg exercise will have a significant higher mean functional score that includes (physical, psychological and social functioning) than the control group who received the routine hospital treatment only. Sample: A sample of 114 adult male and female patients ( 57 patients in each group (study or control group) who met the inclusion criteria was involved in the analysis. Results: there was a statistical significant difference between both study and control groups after applying intradialytic leg exercises in relation to basic physical and social role functions after 3 and 6 weeks consequently. Moreover, there was a statistical significant difference between both study and control groups after applying intradialytic leg exercises in relation to intermediate physical and psychological functions and social activities after 6 weeks; But there was no statistical significant difference regarding social interaction. Conclusion: intradialytic leg exercise was effective to improve many aspects of functional status among patients on hemodialysis. Recommendation: The application of intradialytic leg exercise is recommended to be endorsed as a nursing practice for patients who are scheduled on hemodialysis.
