Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Water near a Uranium Tailing Pond in Jiangxi Province, South China

Abstract: This study was performed in the Linshui River Watershed to explore the contents of heavy metals in river water, their species, and health risks. The test results show that the contents of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), uranium (U), and thorium (Th) are relatively low and below the limit of class III of the environmental quality standards for surface water. According to the analysis through PHREEQC (version 2.18), the main species of As, Cr, Cu, U, and Th are H

“…Nienie et al [2] reported similar results when the studied the seasonal variability of water quality by traceable metals in Sub-urban Area in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The findings were also consistent with those reported by He et al [10]. It has been reported by several authors that the water resources of the mining areas are well characterized by high levels of heavy metals [7,9,10].…”

“…in mining ecosystems have been widely reported [17][18][19][20]. Radionuclides pollution and toxic metals loading in shallow tailings, discharge water, surface water, groundwater, and paddy soil around the study uranium mining area were found and recognized [21][22][23][24]. However, there is a lack of research focusing on the concentrations and distributions of radionuclides and potentially toxic metals in surface water and sediments, especially in the river downstream of the uranium mining.…”

“…However, industrial development and economic growth in developing countries have also resulted in the heavy metal contamination of groundwater, which has become a serious global problem [7][8][9][10]. As a result, research studies have been focusing on quantifying heavy metals and their effects in aqueous environments [8,[11][12][13][14]. Groundwater in the Luan River catchment within the North China plain has also been polluted by industrial, agricultural, and domestic wastewater.…”
