Relationship between sickness presenteeism and awareness and presence or absence of systems for return to work among workers with mental health problems in Japan: an Internet‐based cross‐sectional study: Shotaro Doki, et al. Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences, University of Tsukuba Objective The objective of this study was to clarify the relationship between sickness presenteeism and the degree of awareness of company regulations regarding financial compensation for absenteeism. Methods An Internet‐based survey of 258 full‐time workers who had more than 28 days of sickness absence due to mental health problems was conducted. Workers were categorized as having either low or high sickness presenteeism, and awareness and presence or absence of systems for return to work and duration of financial compensation were compared between groups. Results The following factors were significantly related to high sickness presenteeism based on logistic regression analyses: working for a private company (odds ratio [OR]=2.57; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.10−5.99); recognition of a gradual resumption system (OR=3.89, 95% CI=1.02−14.81); and awareness regarding the duration of financial compensation (OR=1.04, 95% CI=1.01−1.07). Conclusions No relationship was found between mental sickness presenteeism and presence or absence of systems for return to work in our multivariate analysis; however, a relationship was apparent between sickness presenteeism and characteristics of the workers’ companies. These results are expected to contribute to research involving human resources and occupational health.

Background There is a need to understand physical activity types associated with health-related work limitations (also known as presenteeism). This study tests whether additive effects between physical activity types are associated with health-related work limitations among employees from a public university system. Methods A cross-sectional study using health assessment data (n=10,791) was used to examine aims. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models tested differences in work limitations between physical activity groups based on combinations of stretching behavior, aerobic, and muscle strengthening physical activity. Planned contrasts compared differences between select groups. Results There were significant group differences (p<0.001) in reported work limitations after controlling for demographic, season, and health-related variables. Employees who reported participating in aerobic physical activity had significantly lower work limitations levels compared to inactive employees (p=0.027). Employees who reported participating in both aerobic and muscle strengthening physical activity had the lowest work limitations levels compared to all groups and significantly lower work limitations levels compared to employees who participated in aerobic physical activity only (p=0.026). Conclusions Results provide evidence of an additive effect where participating in a combination of aerobic and muscle strengthening physical activities may be most beneficial when targeting health-related work limitations.

The SHIELD (Safety & Health Improvement: Enhancing Law Enforcement Departments) Study is a worksite wellness team-based intervention among police and sheriff departments assessing the program’s effectiveness to reduce occupational risks and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. The SHIELD program focused on improving diet, physical activity, body weight and sleep and reducing the effects of unhealthy stress and behaviors such as tobacco and substance abuse. The SHIELD team-based health promotion program was found to be feasible and effective at 6 months in improving diet, sleep, stress, and overall quality of life of law enforcement department personnel. Both intervention and control groups were followed for 24 months, and we report those durability findings, along with qualitative group interview results that provide insight into the changes of the long term outcomes. Long term effects were observed for consumption of fruits and vegetables and there was some evidence for effects on tobacco and alcohol use. Assessment of dietary habits, physical activity behaviors, weight loss maintenance, and substance use is rare more than one year following an intervention, and in general, initial positive changes do not persist in prior research. The SHIELD program was feasible, effective, and durable for improving dietary changes.
