“…In a comparison of economic costs between the United States, Canada, Sweden, and New Zealand, the annual mean cost per person is from $12,000 to $68,000 US dollars per individual per year (Greenmyer et al, 2018 ). Individuals with FASD have high rates of physical and mental health comorbidities, and high rates of substance use (Popova et al, 2021 ). FASD diagnosis is challenging as there are no reliable biomarkers nor effective treatments.…”

“…Children with FASD have high rates of early life adversity and are less likely to live with both biological parents compared to children without FASD (Flannigan et al, 2021 ). Specifically, in a recent cross-sectional study, 75% of individuals with FASD were involved with the child welfare system, and these individuals are more than four times more lately to also have an anxiety disorder (Popova et al, 2021 ). Unfortunately, children with PAE often have comorbid prenatal and postnatal risk factors, including drug exposures and nutritional deficiencies.…”

“…Although cognitive deficits are the major outcome of prenatal ethanol exposure, increased anxiety behavior has also been observed in many FASDs [ 131 , 132 , 133 , 134 ] and animal studies [ 78 , 135 , 136 , 137 , 138 ]. However, some studies reported increased or decreased anxiety-like behaviors, depending on sex, following prenatal ethanol exposure [ 50 , 51 , 126 , 139 , 140 , 141 , 142 ].…”

“…Individuals with FASD experience complex, lifelong deficits in functioning as a result of prenatal alcohol exposure (Cook et al., 2016; Gagnier et al., 2011; Mattson et al., 2019; May et al., 2014; Popova et al., 2021). These multi‐faceted deficits in domains such as cognition, language, executive functioning, attention, memory and adaptive functioning, including social functioning, combined with other secondary issues such as mental health challenges, drug or alcohol misuse, which place individuals with FASD at greater risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system for a range of illegal activities (Gagnier et al., 2011; O’Connor & Paley, 2009; O’Connor, Shah, et al., 2002; Pei et al., 2011; Popova et al., 2021; Streissguth et al., 2004), including firesetting in some cases. Many of these difficulties share remarkable similarities to the known risk factors for youth firesetting.…”
