“…In agreement with previous studies (Khan et al, 2018; Mbagaya and Odhiambo, 2005), proximity of health facilities to participants home-dwelling was a significant factor that determined health care seeking for childhood diseases. Specifically, respondents who lived nearer to a health care facility were more likely to take medical care at the time of illness than those who lived far ( ≥ 30 min walking distance).…”

“…This study demonstrated that health care facilities were the most frequented sources where care was sought for childhood infectious diseases which coincides with previous studies conducted in rural areas of Ethiopia and Bangladesh (Khan et al, 2018;Kolola et al, 2016). A proportion of the participants sought health care through alternative sources such as pharmacy, home remedies and traditional healing which is similar to a previous Bangladeshi study (Khan et al, 2018). Greater costs of care from health facilities and inadequate mother/caregiver knowledge about medical care might be a potential reason for choosing these alternative health care options.…”

“…20 Moreover, the proximity of health care facility should be considered by policymakers to improve utilization of health care services as the cost of care is not only associated with medical care at health facilities, but also out-of-pocket transportation cost that should be disbursed by the family to reach these facilities. 21 Although a study in Indonesia reported that the number of health resources has increased over the years, it is still unequally distributed across all areas of Indonesia. 22 Additionally, associated opportunity cost (lost wages) as the results of visiting health facilities could be a challenge and might hinder mothers or other family members working in informal sectors to visit health facilities.…”

“…As the study used data from cross–sectional surveys, the analysis could not generate a cause-and-effect relationship between variables. There were variables that might be potentially related to the care-seeking behavior not examined in this study as they are not available in the dataset, such as the quality of health care service and competence of medical staff, 12,30 accessibility to the local health care center, 21 or knowledge of caregiver about childhood illnesses. 12,30 Information provided by respondents was based on women’s recall ability.…”
