“…If this criterion is applied to the BMHS data then 31.6% (12 out of 38) of people with speech affecting strokes who reported that they had a hearing loss had normal hearing. This is very similar to the Hickson et al (1999) data.…”

“…Other researchers (Hickson, Lind, Worrall, Yiu, Barnett & Lovie-Kitchin, 1999) have defined normal hearing in older Australians as being a better ear 4FA of less than or equal to 25dBHL. Not surprisingly, given this more generous criterion for normal hearing, Hickson et al (1999) found that there was a mismatch amongst their participants aged between 60 and 93 years in both directions between self reported hearing loss and level of impairment as measured by pure tone audiometry. That is, approximately one third of participants with ''normal'' hearing , that is, better ear 4FA HTLs of less than or equal to 25dBHL, reported some difficulty with their hearing.…”

“…Research in this area has highlighted the wide range of activity limitations and participation restrictions that occur as a result of hearing impairment (e.g. Dalton et al, 2003;Helvik et al, 2006;Morgan et al, 2002;Stark & Hickson, 2004;Stephens & Zhao, 1996), and the prevalence of hearing impairment in older people means that a significant number of them experience such effects (Hickson et al, 1999;Wilson et al, 1999). Somewhat less well appreciated is the impact of hearing impairment on the spouses of people with impaired hearing.…”
