Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) is a rapidly spreading contagious respiratory disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) which manifests a plethora of health concerns. It may manifest with a wide range of clinical symptoms from no symptoms to respiratory failure and even multi-organ dysfunctions. The COVID-19 infection may present with otological manifestations such as hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, and otalgia. The otological manifestations may be due to the involvement of the eustachian tube and cochlea by COVID-19 infections. The damaging effect of the COVID-19 infection on the inner ear is a new finding which is yet to be explored. Pure tone audiometry and impedance audiometry are two important investigations for auditory assessment among pediatric patients with COVID-19 infection. Although hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo are not common as fever and cough in COVID-19 patients, however, auditory-vestibular symptoms significantly affect the quality of life. Additionally, the anxiety associated with COVID-19 infections may attribute to aggravation of otoneurological symptoms like tinnitus. However, these otoneurological manifestations like hearing loss will affect the speech of the pediatric patients and result in morbid life in the current COVID-19 pandemic. Clinicians or pediatricians should be aware of the otoneurological manifestation in pediatric COVID-19 patients for early identification and management. This review article discusses the details of this epidemiology, etiopathology, assessment, and management of hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo among COVID-19 pediatric patients.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute respiratory disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The clinical presentations of the COVID-9 patients vary from mild respiratory illness to fatal possible outcomes like death. SARS-CoV-2 infection can cause a wide range of extrapulmonary manifestations including sensory and neural complications like olfactory and/or gustatory dysfunction,otologic manifestations and long-term neurological complications. The association between the COVID-19 infection and hearing loss and vertigo make intuitive sense, give neuropathic manifestations of the inner ear resulting in cochleovestibular symptoms. Hearing loss and vertigo are interesting clinical outcomes associated with COVID-19 infections. Hearing loss and vertigo in COVID-19 patients have not received much attention from medical professionals. COVID-19 infection could have deleterious effects on the inner ear despite patients are asymptomatic. Hearing loss and vertigo play an important role for affecting routine activity and result in invisible handicap of the affected person and psychological solitary confinement. In current COVID-19 pandemic, some patients of COVID-19 are presenting with cochleovestibular symptoms such as hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus. The proper understanding of the pathophysiology behind the hearing loss and vertigo in COVID-19 infections requires further research.This review article discusses the details of this epidemiology, etiopathology, assessment and management of the hearing loss and vertigo among COVID-19 patients.

Background and Aims: Single-sided deafness (SSD) is a severe type of hearing loss affecting one ear, and it frequently presents social difficulties for those affected. Head shadow effect and sound localisation play an important role in speech perception. Methods: Research articles on SSD were identified through an online search of PubMed, Scopus, Medline, and Google Scholar databases. Results: SSD affects daily activities and emotional or social well-being. It is necessary to get the early identification of the aetiology of SSD for prompt intervention. The aetiology of SSD can be determined with the use of investigations such as as genetic testing, serological testing, computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging, and DNA testing for viral infections. Rehabilitation options for patients with SSD include cochlear implants, bone-anchored hearing aids, and contralateral routing of sound. Individuals with SSD cochlear implants have strong auditory perception. The objective of this review article is to provide aetiology, clinical presentations, diagnosis and current treatment of SSD. Conclusion: Individuals with SSD commonly experience communication issues that have a substantial negative effect on their quality of life. Word discrimination is hampered by SSD, and this impairment varies depending on the affected ear’s residual hearing. Speech comprehension is frequently difficult for patients with severe SSD, especially in noisy environments.
