Heat blockage of air gap for inner overheating of high-voltage power cable and delay of early detection

Abstract: Early detection for inner overheating of high-voltage cable is important for safe power supply. A new radial heat transfer model is developed for a typical 110 kV cable with an air gap layer. Numerical analyses are conducted for dynamic temperature field in cable induced by hot copper core with different thicknesses of air gap. The results show that the air gap has an important heat blockage for the outward heat transfer in cable. The air gap causes the temperature inside the overheated cable to rise … Show more

“…Since its proposal in the 1940s to the present, finite element analysis (FEA) theory has been continuously developed and has become an important method for solving complex nonlinear problems and multiphysics coupling problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering [3][4]. In [5], finite element analysis was used to study the influence of a single spherical air gap defect on the electric field intensity of high-voltage direct current cables under steady-state conditions. In [6], the influence of different defect types and water positions on electric field distribution was studied through experiments.…”

“…The function of the cable transition end is to connect the cable transmission line to reduce the difficulty of cable production and erection. The cable terminal is used for connecting the cable and substation equipment [3]. High-voltage direct current can not produce current through the insulating material, but it will produce an electric field in it.…”
