Heat shock proteins in children and young adults on chronic hemodialysis

Abstract: Chronic inflammation, lipid and autoimmune disorders are hallmarks of atherogenesis, and hemodialysis per se may be an additional factor predisposing to accelerated atherosclerosis. Elevated levels of heat shock proteins (HSP) and antibodies against these HSP have been described in adults with atherosclerotic lesions and cardiovascular events, but to date there has been a scarcity of investigations on these parameters in adult and pediatric patients on hemodialysis (HD). We have investigated the HSP profile in… Show more

“…There are no available data on human antiHsp60 in the patients on dialysis, except for our preliminary results showing the increased anti-Hsp60 concentrations in HD children and their significant decrease after a single HD session [16] . Lederer et al [17] reported on the increased titers of antibodies against mycobacterial Hsp65 in the HD subjects with vascular events, but van Roon et al [18] proved that the reactions against bacterial and human HSP differ from each other.…”

“…There are no data, apart from our preliminary results, on HSP in the patients with chronic kidney disease, regardless of age or on the differentiation between the dialysis modalities in relation to the HSP concentrations in such a population to date [16] . The aim of our study was to evaluate the levels of circulating Hsp60, Hsp90-␣ , anti-Hsp60 and anti-Hsp70 in the serum samples from children on peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis (HD), and to analyze if there is any difference in the HSP profile between those groups corresponding to lipid disturbances, markers of endothelial activation (sE-selectin) or inflammation (hsCRP, IL-4, IL-12), and whether HSP may serve as markers of atherosclerosis in that group of patients.…”

“…In fact, while a strong correlation between anti-hHSP60 and atherosclerosis has been found in general population and in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction (Heltai et al 2004), it has also been demonstrated that anti-hHSP60 antibodies are not associated to CVD events in diabetic and cardiopathic patients (Gruden et al 2009;Hoymans et al 2008). Regarding HD patients, high serum levels of anti-hHSP60 antibodies were reported in children and young HD patients, whereas adult subjects did not show different serum levels of antihHSP60 when compared to healthy control group (Musial et al 2009;Esposito et al 2010). Similar data resulted from the present study confirms our previous report.…”

“…For patients with other abnormalities, Lee et al reported that plasma from acute respiratory distress syndrome group had higher levels of GRP94, Hsp90, Hsp60, Hsp47, GPx-3, and interleukin-8 (Lee et al, 2012). Musial et al reported higher levels of Hsp90α in children with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis (Musial et al, 2009a) and children undergoing chronic hemodialysis (Musial et al, 2009b). Finally, Hacker et al reported that Hsp27, Hsp70 and Hsp90α were significantly altered in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a leading cause of death characterized by increased cellular stress and inflammation (Hacker et al, 2009).…”
