Heat stress during flowering in cereals – effects and adaptation strategies

Abstract: Summary Heat stress during flowering has differential impact on male and female reproductive organ viability leading to yield losses in field crops. Unlike flooded rice, dryland cereals such as sorghum, pearl millet and wheat have optimised their flower opening during cooler early morning or late evening hours to lower heat stress damage during flowering. Although previous studies have concluded that pollen viability determines seed set under heat stress, recent findings have revealed pearl millet and sorghum … Show more

“…Most previous studies investigated damage induced by HT during the owering stage [2,13,14,[28][29][30], and there have been few investigations of the effects of HT during panicle initiation on rice yield formation [2,3]. Therefore, in this study, we assessed the detrimental effects of HT during panicle initiation in rice.…”

“…Since daily temperature generally peaks at noon, which overlaps with the flowering time in some crops, one of the countermeasures is an effective heat escape mechanism (Jagadish, 2020). Therefore, naturally or genetically introducing flowering traits towards cooler times of day can potentially minimize heat stress damage on reproductive organs.…”

“…Some dryland crops are able to optimize their anthesis during morning or cooler evening periods under heat stress (Aiqing et al, 2018;Bheemanahalli et al, 2019). In contrast, most rice varieties need the genetic introduction of early morning flowering trait to shift their flower opening time (Bheemanahalli et al, 2017;Jagadish, 2020).…”
