Heat tolerance of exercising lean and obese prepubertal boys

Abstract: Seven lean and five obese boys, aged 9-12 yr, exercised in four environments: 21.1, 26.7, 29.4, and 32.2 degrees C Teff. Subjects walked on a treadmill at 4.8 km/h, 5% grade for three 20-min exercise bouts separated by 5-min rest periods. Rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperature (Tsk), heart rate (HR), sweat rate, and oxygen uptake (VO2) were measured periodically throughout the session. Lean boys had lower Tre and HR than obese boys in each of the environments. Increases in Tre were significantly greater fo… Show more

“…Average relative humidity was also quite similar between the present study and that of Hebestreit and Bar-Or (1998;48.4% vs 50-58%). Furthermore, as pointed out earlier, the correction equation worked quite well with the data presented by Haymes et al (1975), which were collected at a relative humidity of 22-25%.…”

“…The obese boys had higher HR compared to the lean boys in all climatic conditions. However, the correction equation developed by Hebestreit and Bar-Or (1998) worked quite well for the obese boys studied by Haymes et al (1975): average group HRs reported during exercise at 26°C, 36°C, 41°C and 48°C dry bulb temperature were 133 beats/min, 146 beats/min, 151 beats/min and 167 beats/min, respectively. The corrected HR values were 128 beats/min, 129 beats/min, 127 beats/min and 131 beats/min, respectively.…”

“…When exercising on the treadmill at the same speed and grade, heart rates have been reported as lower in obese children [19], higher in obese boys [9], not significantly different when boys and girls were combined [16], and higher in obese boys and obese girls when analyzed separately [16]. Clarification of these relationships requires additional investigation.…”
