Working fluid with higher thermal conductivity and tube with better fluid mixing are two crucial elements for heat transfer enhancement in heat exchanger system. Hence, several methods and techniques have been explored to improve heat transfer efficiency, including dispersing nanoparticles into conventional heat transfer fluid and inserting instruments inside the tube of the heat exchanger. Studies have shown that nanofluid can improve heat transfer efficiency of the system due to its higher thermal conductivity and drastic Brownian motion of nanoparticles while inserts within tube can improve heat transfer efficiency by increasing axial velocity of working fluid for better fluid mixing. This article summarized 109 of journals from recent research on heat transfer enhancement of nanofluid flowing inside the tube with inserts as well as discussing the significant parameters that affected the system’s efficiency such as nanoparticles’ volume fraction, Reynolds number and types and configurations of inserts. Ultimately, analysis will be carried out to determine the most suitable modification of twisted tape inserts with the most optimum value of nanoparticle volume fraction for turbulence flow regime. Finally, some problems that need to be solved for future research such as agglomeration and pressure drop are discussed.

Molten salts are now widely used as heat transfer fluids in solar thermal plants and molten salt nuclear reactors. In order to explore their heat transfer enhancement method, new coaxial cross twisted tapes (CCTTs) are applied to plain tubes with molten salt FLiBe as the working fluid, and the characteristics of pressure drop and heat transfer are numerically investigated by the CFD software STAR-CCM+. Simulations are performed in a laminar flow regime where the Reynolds number ranges from 100 to 1100, and the velocity, temperature profiles, and enhanced performance evaluation criteria (PEC) are analyzed to investigate the heat transfer performance of FLiBe in the tube fitted with CCTTs and typical twisted tape (TT). Research was performed on water and lubricating oil to investigate the effects of fluid thermal-physical properties on the performance of CCTTs. The results show that CCTTs can produce stronger swirl flow and greatly enhance heat transfer. For overall heat transfer performance, the maximum PEC of FLiBe with CCTTs reaches 2.37. The comparison of three different fluids also indicates that CCTTs have better heat transfer performance for higher Prandtl number fluids such as molten salt. The correlations of CCTTs and TT are developed into a unified form for the prediction of friction factors and Nusselt numbers for various Prandtl number fluids.

In the drilling of horizontal wells, the drill cuttings tend to settle down on the low side of the annulus due to gravity and form a stationary bed, which results in hole cleaning problems. In this paper, a novel type of drillpipe with an elliptical shape was proposed to alleviate inadequate hole cleaning during the drilling of horizontal wells. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) Eulerian-Eulerian approach with the Realizable k-ɛ turbulence model was developed to predict the solid–liquid two-phase flow in the annular space. Numerical examples were given to investigate the influence of different parameters on cuttings’ transport behavior, and the elliptical drillpipe was compared with the circular drillpipe. The annular cuttings concentration, annular pressure drop, and hole cleaning efficiency were evaluated. The numerical results clarify the potential of the elliptical drillpipe to enhance the hole cleaning efficiency without significantly increasing the annular pressure drop. Due to the swirl flow and secondary flow caused by the rotation of the curvature wall, the swaying phenomenon of drill cuttings’ distribution along the rotation direction of drillpipe was observed and enhanced the cuttings transport ability. Using the elliptical drillpipe as a joint-type tool can improve hole cleaning performance. Under the optimum conditions applied in this study, the hole cleaning efficiency increased by nearly 18%.
