“…The evidence that vitamin C supplementation or probiotics used for prevention of the common cold, and zinc used for treatment of the common cold, are effective (Hao 2011; Hemilä 2013; Singh 2013a) is stronger than the evidence for Echiacea . Evidence for the effects of other CAM interventions is similarly limited ( Pelargonium sidoides , Timmer 2009) or even weaker (saline nasal irrigation, Kassel 2010; increased fluid intake Guppy 2011; heated humidified air, Singh 2013b; garlic, Lissiman 2012; and Chinese medical herbs, Zhang 2010). …”

“…A Cochrane Review assessed that the current evidence could not support or refute effectiveness and recommended that there is a need for robustly designed and adequately powered randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effectiveness of rhinothermy to treat the common cold. 21 We have reported a tolerability study that found that a high flow nasal cannula device (myAIRVO 2, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Auckland, New Zealand) modified to deliver high flow humidified air at 41°C via wide bore nasal cannulae was well tolerated in healthy volunteers. 26 The potential advantage of this device for rhinothermy is that it can deliver a consistent temperature, humidity and flow rate direct into the upper airways.…”
