Heating of air in the nasal airways in patients with chronic sinus disease before and after sinus surgery

Abstract: The main goal of this study was to determine the influence of sinus surgery on the heating of inspired air in the nose. Intranasal temperature values of 22 patients with chronic sinus disease were measured after inspiration at different locations in the nasal cavity. Measurements were done before and 6-8 weeks after sinus surgery. The patients were compared to 22 healthy control subjects. Nasal airway temperature did not differ between the two study groups at any location in the nasal cavity. Nasal decongestio… Show more

“…3 Alterations in nasal conditioning after ESS have been studied in a single publication performed by our working group in 2001. 4 We found no difference in nasal airway temperature in patients with CRS without nasal polyps before and after sinus surgery. 4 The increase in humidity had not been measured and patients with nasal polyps had not been included.…”

“…Parameters of nasal geometry in the study previously performed by our working group on CRS without nasal polyps were not recorded. 4 The aim of this study was to investigate nasal conditioning after ESS with/without septoplasty and turbinoplasty in patients with CRS with nasal polyps. In addition, we examined parameters describing nasal patency and nasal geometry possibly influencing nasal conditioning before and after endonasal surgery and determined their relationship to nasal conditioning parameters.…”

“…On the other hand, data dealing with nasal air climatization (humidification, heating) before and after septoplasty are still missing. We were able to show in numerous previous studies that in vivo measurements of intranasal humidity and temperature are practical 6–9 . Therefore, the aim of this study was to measure intranasal air humidity and temperature values before and after septoplasty with turbinoplasty.…”

“…In patients suffering from chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps, sinus surgery does not affect nasal warming [140]. In patients with obstructing nasal polyps, heating and humidification of the nasal airways is significantly reduced compared to healthy noses.…”
