Natural gas needs to be depressurized before wellhead to gas gathering station or long-distance pipeline to users. At present, choking technique is widely used at wellhead and pressure regulating station, which will cause a lot of energy loss. Considerable economic and social benefits will be generated, if these residual pressures can be recycled. In this article, the pressure energy contained in the natural gas wellhead and pressure regulating valve station will be calculated based on exergy analysis. The technology and present situation of residual pressure utilization of natural gas are summarized. The existing problems and future research directions in the process of residual pressure utilization are pointed out through cases. At present, there are many studies on the use of residual pressure in the pressure regulating station, but there are relatively few studies in the natural gas wellhead. Residual pressure utilization technology improves energy utilization efficiency and makes an important contribution to energy conservation and emission reduction.

Turboexpander, placed parallel to the regulator in natural gas pressure regulating station (PRS), was proposed to utilize the residual pressure by engineers and researchers. However, the relationship between the power generated by the turboexpander and the energy used to preheat the natural gas (NG) needs to be carefully analysed. This article estimated the electric power that could be generated using residual pressure based on an actual PRS in China. An analysis model was established to study the relationship between electric power generated by the turboexpander and energy used to preheat the NG. Pressures both inlet and outlet and inlet temperature of the established power generation model were carefully analysed as well as the natural gas hydrate formation temperature. The results indicate that the electric power generated by the turbine expander and the energy used to preheat natural gas decrease as the pressure difference decreases. Most of the energy needed to preheat NG in the procedure of PRS can be obtained through the established turboexpander. What’s more, residual electric power can be obtained when the difference pressure is less than the critical point in which the energy used to preheat NG is equal to the energy generated by the turboexpander.

The development of resource-saving technologies for existing energy sources is one of the priority tasks of the energy strategy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which provides for the reduction of losses and cost reduction at all stages of the technological process during the extraction, preparation and transportation of natural gas. Today, it is very promising to utilize the energy of excess pressure of natural gas at gas distribution stations using expander units. A solution to the problem of lack of gas heating in the expander-generator unit can be a heated installation scheme through the use of a gas heating system with an air heat pump unit. Calculations of the energy efficiency of an expander generating unit were carried out under various operating conditions when heating natural gas in front of the expander using a heat pump unit.
