Heavy Duty Gas Turbine Simulation: Global Performances Estimation and Secondary Air System Modifications

Abstract: This paper reviews a modular-structured program ESMS (Energy System Modular Simulation) for the simulation of air-cooled gas turbines cycles, including the calculation of the secondary air system. The program has been tested for the Ansaldo Energia gas turbine V94.3A, which is one of the more advanced models in the family Vx4.3A with a rated power of 270 MW. V94.3A cooling system has been modeled with SASAC (Secondary Air System Ansaldo Code), the Ansaldo code used to predict the structure of the flow through … Show more

“…Many scholars have modeled and analyzed the whole secondary air system, considering each of its elements as a "black box" and establishing the connections among them. The network of the secondary air system is drawn, and the conditions of each element during different phases are predicted using analysis codes (e.g., ESMS) [10][11][12]. However, unlike those simplified quasi-one-dimensional models, the flow within the compressor bleed system is strongly three-dimensional and the different parts interact with each other.…”

“…Their approach was able to be integrated directly in whole engine cycle performance model. Some others tried to couple SAS simulation and coolant calculation by matching the characteristic curves of secondary air circuit and the flow function of the blade cooling network to define the working point of the system [6]. As a result, it would be possible to investigate the effects of new design solutions on internal air system and on overall cycle performance [6].…”

As a result, it would be possible to investigate the effects of new design solutions on internal air system and on overall cycle performance [6]. Coupling between 1-D blades and vanes cooling flow codes in Matlab as well as 1-D cavity solver with overall SAS fluid network is another challenging area that covered by [7] and [8].…”
