Heavy Metal Contamination Status of Water, Agricultural Soil, and Plant in the Semiarid Region of Kandahar, Afghanistan

Abstract: Agricultural irrigation using wastewater containing heavy metals (HM) might impose risks in bioaccumulation in foods. The current study was performed to assess the status of HM in terms of water-soil−plant systems in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where industrial and domestic wastewater was partially reused for irrigation. Water, soil, and plant samples were collected from wastewater sites in Haji-Arab (HA), Bala-Karz (BKZ), and Mahal-e-Nejat (MN) in comparison with those from a freshwater-irrigated site in Char-Bagh… Show more

“…Bioaccumulation is the gradual accumulation of certain substances, such as heavy metals and selenium, in plant tissues. These elements are derived from a variety of sources, including natural deposits, industrial activities, and agricultural practices [1][2][3][4][5]. The accumulation of selenium (Se) and heavy metals (HMs) in plants is of great importance due to the potential threat posed to plant health and human consumption.…”

“…Water and soil contamination has always been a noticeable matter in environmental studies, leading to the developing and designing heavy metal ions receptors [ [1] , [2] , [3] , [4] ]. Mercury is a highly toxic metal [ [5] , [6] , [7] ] and its compounds are used in various industries and present in wastewaters, which can accumulate in living organisms.…”
