Heavy Metal Content in PM2.5Air Samples Collected in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, México

Abstract: The air PM 2.5 concentration and its heavy metal content (Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, As) were measured in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Méxicoin Mexico, an area that is characterized by both very active and diverse industrial activity and intense highway traffic and industrial activity. The 24-h PM 2.5 samples were collected in two different zones during a 1-year-long measurement program (February 2008-February 2009). The year PM 2.5 average was above 15 µg/m 3 exceeding Mexican and international standards. The dif… Show more

“…Mn was only correlated with Fe without correlations with other crustal elements. Both of them have been considered to be attributable to soil erosion . PM 2.5 was notably correlated with S. In regions with sources of SO 2 , secondary sulfate is usually a significantly large fraction of fine particles .…”

“…Both of them have been considered to be attributable to soil erosion. [25] PM 2.5 was notably correlated with S. In regions with sources of SO 2 , secondary sulfate is usually a significantly large fraction of fine particles. [26] Meanwhile, moderate correlations were observed between PM 2.5 and K, Cu, and As.…”

“…The State of Nuevo León, in the northeast of Mexico, has an unregulated urban growth. Its main city, the Monterrey Metropolitan Zone, presents serious environmental problems: geological and hydrological risks, water scarcity, green areas loss, air pollution, amongst many others (Cantú et al 2013;Badillo et al 2015;Orta et al 2016;Sanchez-Castillo et al 2016;Sisto et al 2016;Sanchez-Castillo et al 2017).…”

“…The Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA) include 18 surrounding municipalities of the Nuevo Leon state and is located at Northeastern Mexico (25° 40′ N/100° 18′ W), almost 87% of the state population lives there (Blanco-Jiménez et al 2015 ; INEGI 2020 ) and is considered an industrial area of great economic importance due to the variety of activities such as metallurgy, chemical, pharmaceutical, and textiles, to name a few (Valdez-Cerda et al 2011 ). However, according to reports, the MMA is considered one of the most polluted industrial regions of Mexico with high levels of lead, cadmium, and arsenic in dust and streets (Green and Sanchez 2013 ; Badillo-Castañeda et al 2015 ). Heavy metals, even at extremely low concentrations, are toxic and can promote the development of diseases (Sbarato et al 1997 ; Valdez-Cerda et al 2011 ; Badillo-Castañeda et al 2015 ).…”
