Heavy Metal Pollution and Soil Quality Assessment under Different Land Uses in the Red Soil Region, Southern China

Abstract: The influences of different land uses associated with human activities on soil quality and the redistribution of heavy metal in soil have been widely concerned. Surface soil samples were obtained to assess comprehensive soil quality in a typical red soil region of southern China, combining the heavy metal pollution evaluation with fertility evaluation. It can be learned from the results that the overall level of soil fertility was at medium and lower level, and soil heavy metal pollution risk in the study area… Show more

“…It plays a crucial role in agriculture owing to its high production potential and research significance. However, the low pH of red soil results in the high solubility of heavy metals in their available state, making them easily absorbed by living organisms (Yang et al., 2022). Additionally, red soil has a low organic matter content because of the rapid degradation and conversion of organic matter (Herndon et al., 2017), which plays a crucial role in reducing the mobility of heavy metals in the soil layer containing various functional groups that can readily absorb and immobilize them (Xie et al., 2021).…”

“…The available potassium (AvK) was determined by ammonium acetate extraction and flame photometry [36]. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) was determined by the ammonium acetate method [37]. The atomic state contents of the soil heavy metal pollution indicators cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry [38].…”

“…As the largest developing country in the world, China’s industry and economy have developed rapidly in the past 40 years. According to the national soil pollution survey bulletin, heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil in southern China is serious [ 12 , 13 ]. However, with the rapid development of industrial and agricultural activities, Hg emissions have also increased significantly [ 14 ].…”
