Heavy Metal Tolerance of Fungi Isolated from Contaminated Soil

Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the tolerance of some resistant fungal strains from soils contaminated with heavy metals. Various fungal strains were isolated from soil samples collected from studied sites which heavy metals and other pollutants have been emitted in effluents for several years. Fungi isolated belong to different genera; however, Penicillium spp. showed the most frequent species. The microbial number was remarkably higher in the control soil than contaminated soil samples collected from… Show more

“…Metals such as copper and zinc are essential to biological actions, but they could be toxic at a certain high level depending on both the isolated strain and site of isolation . The fungal populations isolated from sites contaminated with heavy metals demonstrated higher tolerance to their toxicity .…”

“…Components of cell wall like polysaccharides, peptides and peptioglycan are rich in ligands that can bind metal ions (e.g -OH, -COOH, -HPO 4 2−, SO 4 2− -RCOO−, R 2 OSO 3−, -NH 2 , and -SH where amine group is the most effective one for the uptake of metal as it can bind anionic metals via electrostatic force of attraction and cationic metals via surface complex formation ) . Fungi have greater surface : volume ratio in comparison to bacteria therefore tolerance level of fungi is more as compared to bacteria 49 .A brief summary of the fungi which are used in the removal of some heavy metals is given in table 4. Algae are the photosynthetic microbes that may be single or multicellular with on roots ,stem or leaves and may grow in freshwater also as in seawater.…”
