Heavy Metals in Waters and Suspended Sediments Affected by a Mine Tailing Spill in the Upper San Lorenzo River, Northwestern México

Abstract: Concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), silver (Ag) and zinc (Zn) were evaluated in water and suspended sediments of the upper waters of San Lorenzo River in NW Mexico following a mine tailing spill. Except As (6.64-35.9 µg L(-1)), dissolved metal concentrations were low (Ag <0.06-0.22; Cd 0.01-0.34; Cu 4.71-10.2; Hg 0.02-0.24; Pb <0.15-0.65; Zn 86-1,080 µg L(-1)) and were less than the upper limits established by UNEP (Water quality for ecosystem and human health, 2… Show more

“…The concentrations of dissolved metals in the water samples were determined with a GFAAS, VARIAN SpectrAA220 atomic absorption spectrometer, injecting directly the sample into the detection system with flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). Graphite furnace analysis (GFAAS) was used for samples with readings below the limit of detection for FAAS (Páez-Osuna et al, 2015). Pb and Cd were not detected with GFAAS even after concentration of 1 L sample on NH4OH-pretreated Chelex 100 columns and elution with 40 mL of HNO3 (2 M).…”

“…1 ) in January 2013. This significantly impacted the waters and suspended sediments (Páez-Osuna et al 2015 ), causing massive fish mortality (Páez-Osuna et al 2022 ). In the subsequent week of the spill, the condition changed in the affected section (Fig.…”

“…Large companies store the mine tailings behind dammed impoundments, often termed as tailing ponds or tailing dams (Kossoff et al 2014). Unfortunately, the frequency of dam failures is high resulting in both economic and environmental issues (Páez-Osuna et al 2015, Schoenberger 2016, Jain and Das 2017.…”
