“…These encouraging anatomical results after Densiron are supported by others [9,10] . However, the use of Densiron implies the burden of another surgery to remove the silicone oil and debates about possible retinal harm due to Densiron are ongoing.…”

“…These persistent MHs have a poor visual outcome. Strategies to treat these persistent MHs include revitrectomy with gas [6,7] , use of heavy silicone oil [8][9][10] , application of autologous platelet concentrate (APC) or serum [11][12][13][14] , and most recently ILM or lens capsule flap translocation [15,16] or surgical induction of macular detachment [17] . The usefulness of these different methods and healing adjuvants still remains controversial and studies are often small, have a rather short follow-up or lack optical coherencewith revitrectomy with gas plus APC or whole blood (WB).…”

“…In such cases, as well as in cases with idiopathic MH that fail to close after PPV and ILM, very few treatment options are left. Such patients are usually submitted to extended ILM peeling [23], with or without heavy silicone oil implantation [24]. The technique presented in this study can be used in these circumstances, alone or as an adjuvant to extended ILM peeling, increasing the likelihood of successful anatomical and functional outcomes.…”

“…However, it causes complications, such as emulsification and inflammatory reaction. 29 Some very recent results are encouraging, 30 but most clinicians are awaiting results from ongoing heavy silicone oil trials. 12 Hydrogels and smart hydrogels seem to remain as the best candidates as long-term vitreous substitutes because they show excellent transparency and good biocompatibility.…”
