Hedonic and Utilitarian Motivations of Social Network Site Usage

Abstract: Social Network Sites (SNSs) such as Facebook bring users enjoyment, which positively influences their Actual System Use. Whereas this finding is consistent across different studies and confirms hedonic motivations for SNS use, the question whether utilitarian motives also influence users' usage behavior remains open. Indeed, the findings concerning the influence of Perceived Usefulness differ substantially. Building on both the hedonic and utilitarian foundations of the Technology Acceptance Model, we study wh… Show more

“…In H4, we proposed that intention to use smartphone for learning has positive effect on actual usage. H4 was also supported by existing dataset, which is also related with past studies (Ernst, Pfeiffer, & Rothlauf, 2013;Moya et al, 2018;Xu, Ryan, Prybutok, & Wen, 2012).…”

“…Among these results, which are based on total effects and consequently include direct effects and indirect effects, there is general agreement with the direct effects reported in previous studies and introduced in the theoretical model caused by Perceived Ease of Use Hsu & Lu, 2004), Technology Self-efficacy (Hong et al, 2013), and Flow Experience (Chang & Zhu, 2012;Ernst et al, 2013;Gao & Bai, 2014).…”

“…Once a child experiences increased flow experience, using SNS strengthens a positive attitude to the SNS both directly and indirectly by strengthening the child's perception that SNS is useful to him or her. In practice, this direct effect of Flow Experience on Attitude toward Use of Technology is similar to the indirect effect via Perceived Enjoyment reported by Gao and Bai (2014), Chang and Zhu (2012), and Ernst et al (2013).…”

“…Therefore, SNSs are at least partly hedonic systems (Ernst et al 2013a;Van der Heijden 2004) that provide positive feelings and experiences for their users in the form of Perceived Enjoyment (Ernst et al 2013b;Hu et al 2011;Sledgianowski and Kulviwat 2008 Perceived Risk, in general, can alter an individual's feelings (Yüksel and Yüksel 2007). Specifically, due to the perceived negative consequences associated with it, Perceived Risk causes negative feelings such as anxiety, discomfort and uncertainty (Dowling and Staelin 1994;Featherman 2001).…”

“…We then reveal and discuss our results before summarizing our findings, presenting their theoretical as well as practical implications, and providing an outlook on further research. Ernst et al 2013a) that "aim to provide self-fulfilling value to the user, … [which] is a function of the degree to which the user experiences fun when using the system" ( Van der Heijden 2004, p. 696). Indeed, SNS members have fun while using SNSs in general and, in particular, experience joy from the social interactions they enable (e.g., Boyd and Ellison 2007;Hu et al 2011;Sledgianowski and Kulviwat 2008;Thambusamy et al 2010).…”
