Helicobacter Pylori Infection in Children of Low and High Socioeconomic Status in Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: This survey was designed to evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in asymptomatic children from families of low and high socioeconomic status living in two neighboring communities in Teresina in northeastern Brazil. The study included 303 children, 163 (53.8%) males and 140 (46.2%) females, ranging in age from 6 months to 12 years. Helicobacter pylori status was determined by the H. pylori stool antigens test, in which sensitivity and specificity values for Brazilian children were 96.9% and … Show more

“…The results of this imunocromatographic test are in disagreement with the immunoassay tests executed in Brazil (2,3,11,13,14,(16)(17)(18)21). Our results are also in disagreement with some results obtained even in different areas of the world, by immunocromatographic assay (4,9,18) .…”

“…Due to these characteristics, the use of FAT by immunochromatography in developing countries is attractive. To the best of our knowledge, only nine studies (2,3,11,13,14,(16)(17)(18)21) in the past ten years evaluated FAT to diagnosis H. pylori infection in Brazil, most of them used immuno-enzymatic assay and only one used immunochromatography (18) .…”

“…pylori colonizes the human stomach during childhood 26 and survives in the human stomach, the only niche known to date, for the lifetime of the carrier 5 . In most of the individuals H. pylori infection may be asymptomatic, causing chronic gastritis.…”

“…The stool antigen tests based on immunoassay (ELISA) have been tested in several laboratories of the world, including in Brazil 4,[26][27][28] , and the results have been satisfactory. In Brazil, previous validation of a monoclonal stool antigen test for diagnosis of H. pylori was reported in children 27 ; however, the stool antigen test based on lateral flow chromatography has not yet been tested in adults.…”

“…In populations with a higher SES, the risk of acquiring it also begins early, although more slowly, reaching significantly lower rates than those seen in populations with a low SES. Acquiring the infection during childhood may be decisive to the morbidity and mortality associated with chronic H pylori infection in the adult population (49,140,156,162) .…”
