Helium removal from tokamaks

Abstract: Helium, as the ash of burning D-T plasma, is an unavoidable impurity component necessarily present already in near future tokamak experiments with significant alpha particle heating. Its efficient removal from the burning zone of a D-T fusion reactor (or lack thereof) will play a key role in the path towards achievement of economic fusion power production. A survey is given of the issues related to this question. Since there is as yet no experimental experience with thermonuclear plasmas significantly heated b… Show more

“…The activities in 2-D modelling of the divertor plasma are widespread in the plasma physics community. A number of codes suitable for this purpose are available, including EDGE2D-Eirene (Taroni et al 1992;Simonini et al 1994), UEDGE (Rognlien et al 1992), SONIC (Shimizu et al 2009) and the SOLPS code family (Reiter et al 1991;Schneider et al 1992;Kukushkin et al 2011;Wiesen et al 2015).…”

“…The B2-Eirene code [10] is routinely applied to modelling of detachment in TCV [2]. Parallel field T e and n e profiles at various radii in the scrape-off layer (SOL) are an automatic result of any converged solution.…”

“…Presently, the favoured solutions to these problems are based on the extrapolation of the radiative divertor regimes observed in experiments, where volumetric losses reduce the power and ion¯ux to the target achieving the detached divertor regime. Two-dimensional plasma¯uid codes coupled to Monte-Carlo or diusive codes for neutral species such as B2-EIRENE [2,3], EDGE2D-NIMBUS [4,5] and UEDGE [6,7] have been developed to perform realistic calculations of the divertor and scrape-o layer (SOL) plasma parameters. These codes are routinely used to optimise the design of divertors for existing and next step devices.…”
