Abstract:The synthesis of α‐bromocarboxylic acid by treatment of aliphatic acid containing α‐hydrogen with bromine in the presence of a catalytic amount of phosphorus or phosphorus tribromide is generally known as the Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky reaction or Zelinsky reaction.
